Eagle Box with LidEagle Box with Lid

This traditional Tlingit bentwood box was created by George Bennett Sr., a Tlingit carver who presently calls Sitka, Alaska his home. Mr. Bennett currently helps to educate people about Sitka’s history as it relates to the Tlingit culture and Russian influence, as well as the beauty of Sitka’s wonders at the Sitka National historical Park, located approximately 1/5 mile from the Harrigan Centennial Hall downtown.

This particular bentwood box has an eagle displayed over two sides. On either side of the eagle, there is a red stripe, representative of house poles. The Eagle is the counterpart to the Raven as moieties (clans) in the Tlingit culture. The Eagle is regarded as a symbol of power and prestige. These majestic birds are abundant in Southeast Alaska.

Both the body and lid were made from yellow cedar, a common wood in Southeast Alaska. Yellow cedar is denser than red cedar and much more durable. It is commonly used in carvings such as bentwood boxes, dishes, and halibut hooks.
